Your Defenders Initiative: Fighting for Victim Rights and Equal Justice
Victim Advocacy
Your Defenders Initiative (YD) is an advocacy collective founded by Attorney Arezou Bakhtjou—crime victim, victim advocate, investigative journalist, and criminal defense attorney who has witnessed firsthand how discretionary policing and prosecution practices cause re-victimization by emboldening aggressors. When police ignore victim reports, when district attorneys fail to file charges, or when the justice system treats identical crimes with vastly different responses—victims deserve advocates who understand these failures and bravely expose intentional or negligent discrepancies.
Standing With Victims Against Unequal Treatment
YD Initiative was born from a powerful observation: Justice Cannot Be Discretionary. Protection Is Not Optional. Yet across California, victims face shocking disparities in how law enforcement and prosecutors handle their cases. Some victims watch perpetrators walk free while others see similar—or far less serious—offenses result in aggressive prosecution and excessive charges. This unequal treatment under the very same law violates the fundamental promise of our justice system and leaves countless crime victims without recourse, protection, or justice.
Victim Rights Support and Resources
Victim Rights Education: Many crime victims don’t know their legal rights under California’s Victims’ Bill of Rights (Marsy’s Law) and federal victim protection laws. YD ensures victims understand their right to be heard, their right to protection from the accused, and their right to timely notification about case proceedings.
Resources and Referrals: YD connects crime victims with the resources they need to heal and seek justice.
Advocacy and Oversight: YD documents patterns of police misconduct, prosecutorial discretion abuse, and unequal treatment in the justice system. When police intentionally ignore victim reports, when district attorneys selectively decline to prosecute while aggressively overcharging the same crimes depending on who the offender is—we advocate for audit, investigation, accountability, and oversight bodies.
Community and Support: Crime victims often feel isolated. YD creates community, ensuring no victim stands alone against a system that has failed them. YD is the Voice Of the Victims (VOV).
Exposing Discretionary Justice and Police Accountability Issues
The criminal justice system’s promise of equal protection under the law rings hollow when enforcement is selective and prosecution is discretionary. YD confronts these uncomfortable truths:
- Identical crimes receiving wildly different treatment
- Police departments selectively investigating the very same crimes depending on who reports and who commits them
- District attorneys overcharging certain defendants while failing to file charges against others for the same and even more serious offenses
This isn’t justice—it’s discretionary enforcement that perpetuates inequality and denies crime victims their fundamental rights.
A Voice for Systemic Change
Your Defenders Initiative is founded by a crime victim who has seen both sides of the system. We understand law enforcement practices and prosecutorial decision-making. We aim to empower victims, demand accountability, lobby for legislation and systemic reform, and advocate for victim rights protection.
If you’re facing selective policing and prosecution, or unequal treatment, Your Defenders Initiative stands ready to advocate for your rights.
You are not alone. Your voice matters. Justice cannot be discretionary.
