Compassionate Crime Victim Advocacy: Advocating for Justice When Institutions Paid to Protect Fail the Victims
Your Defenders provides victim advocacy for crime victims throughout California who have been failed by the institutions designed to protect them. Founded by victim advocate Arezou Bakhtjou—herself a crime victim and survivor of systemic failure that emboldened aggressors to continue targeting and re-offending—we understand that being victimized by crime is only the beginning of a difficult and often re-traumatizing journey.
When law enforcement fails to investigate, prosecutors fail to prosecute, and courts enable aggressor weaponization of the court system, Your Defenders provides accountability advocacy, and systemic reform.
What Is Victim Advocacy?
Victim advocacy means standing beside crime survivors as they navigate California’s complex criminal justice system. A victim advocate serves as your voice and ally—helping you understand your rights under Marsy’s Law, and demand accountability for both the aggressors and the failing institutions. Your Defenders is the Voice of the Victims (VOV).
We go beyond traditional support. We document law enforcement failures and discretionary policing practices, investigate prosecutorial misconduct, expose court system abuse, and fight for systemic change through legislative advocacy and public accountability campaigns and audits.
Victims’ Rights Enforcement
Under California’s Marsy’s Law crime victims have the right to be heard at court proceedings, be protected from defendants, and be informed of case developments.
We strive to ensure you understand and can exercise your victims’ rights throughout the criminal justice process.
Police Accountability Advocacy
When law enforcement intentionally and/ or negligently fails victims—refusing to investigate, dismissing reports, declining to provide protection, or displaying clear bias—we take action. Our police accountability work includes helping victims file complaints, auditing and documenting systemic failures, publicly exposing patterns of negligence, and working collectively to establish informal oversight bodies.
Police accountability is essential for victim safety and justice. It is unacceptable for the victims to be failed by those sworn to protect them.
Prosecutorial Accountability
Discretionary charging practices and abuse of prosecutorial discretion harm countless crime victims every year. When prosecutors unjustly and unequally dismiss cases, ignore required victim consultation under Marsy’s Law, or engage in outright misconduct, we investigate and advocate for accountability.
We audit and document prosecutorial patterns, and demand that prosecutors answer to the victims they’re supposed to serve.
Protection from Court System Weaponization
Abusers and aggressors frequently weaponize the court system through frivolous lawsuits, vexatious litigation, and manipulation of the system to continue terrorizing, threatening, bulling, re-victimizing and re-traumatizing their targets.
We advocate for court reforms preventing system manipulation, document weaponization patterns for vexatious litigant designation, and advocate for measures that would ensure courts protect victims rather than enable continued abuse by the emboldened aggressors.
Legislative Reform and Systemic Change
Individual victim support, while essential, cannot solve systemic problems. Your Defenders Initiative actively engages in legislative advocacy to reform California laws, policies, and practices that fail crime victims.
We draft and support victims’ rights legislation, testify before legislative committees, partner with lawmakers, build coalitions with advocacy organizations, and amplify survivor voices in policy debates. Our focus includes strengthening prosecutorial accountability mechanisms, implementing police oversight, enhancing victims’ rights enforcement, and preventing court weaponization.
Systemic failures require systemic solutions. We transform individual experiences of injustice into collective action for change.
Community Support Through Your Defenders Collective
Healing happens in community. Isolation empowers abusers and protects failing institutions. Through Your Defenders Collective, we are building a powerful network of survivors, advocates, and truth-seekers dedicated to mutual support and collective action.
Together, we will ensure accountability.
When the system designed and paid to protect you becomes part of the problem and directly and/ or indirectly assists the aggressors in further victimization of their victims, we are your defenders.
Why Your Defenders Is Different
Founded by victim advocate Arezou Bakhtjou—a longtime indigent defense attorney, legislative activist, legal and investigative journalist, and crime victim who experienced firsthand how institutional failures embolden aggressors—Your Defenders uniquely combines lived survivor experience with deep legal expertise and unwavering commitment to justice and accountability for the aggressors and the institutions that fail those they are paid to serve and protect.
We investigate. We document. We expose. We demand accountability. We lobby for legislative change. We advocate for audit and oversight.
We don’t just support individual survivors—we work to change the systems that failed them.
Our accountability-focused approach recognizes that supporting victims while accepting systemic failure as inevitable is insufficient. True victim advocacy requires fighting to dismantle the systems, practices, and cultures that enable victimization and re-victimization.
Your Rights. Your Voice. Your Defenders.
You are not alone. Your pain is valid. Your voice matters. Our collective voices as victims matters.
